Ricoh Asia Pacific Pte Ltd continues to excel in the area of sustainable environment through the annual nationwide campaign, Eco Action Day, in Singapore. Singapore Creative CSR Awards 2016, held at Fairmont Singapore on 17 March, recognised Ricoh for its effort towards engaging and reaching out to wider public to encourage awareness and action for the environment in 2014-2015. The award also honours Ricoh for its creative, sustainable and effective CSR programmes in demonstrating the organisation’s ethical values, creative approach to differentiate their CSR initiatives, commitment to sustaining the programme, impact on the community, environment and social purpose, measuring and evaluating results.
Mr. J.D. Kasamoto, General Manager, Service & Environment Division of Ricoh Asia Pacific & China, who receives the award on stage said, “Ricoh Group first mooted the idea of commemorating World Environment Day in 2006, and decided to do so by engaging their employees, customers, corporate neighbours and government partners to take action to reduce their impact on the environment on that day.”
Ricoh Asia Pacific took the lead and embarked the first Eco Action Day in Singapore on 5th June 2007, in collaboration with Singapore Environment Council (SEC). Since 2014, Ricoh Asia Pacific relaunched the campaign with a new theme: “Green the Red Dot, Join the Movement”, to call on businesses, schools and the wider public to join the national movement to green Singapore, also known as the “little red dot”, by pledging simple actions to reduce energy and resource consumption in the office, school and at home, thereby minimise the carbon emission. It hopes that by encouraging simple acts such as conserving energy, reducing waste and raising environmental awareness, it will help the wider public ingrain these actions into daily life.
“We are very happy and motivated to be recognised for our efforts in running this campaign. It had a humble beginning of only 18 participating organisations back then in 2007, but today more than 700 organisations have participated in this movement for the good cause of the environment. As the largest and longest running business-led environmental awareness initiative in Singapore, we hope that Eco Action Day can accelerate the awareness of the importance of conserving energy and resources so as to reduce the carbon emissions across different sectors nationwide and help Singapore along the sustainable development path to become a smart, eco-friendly city with a ‘zero-waste’ culture and a flourishing green economy by 2030”, said Mr. Kasamoto.
As part of the campaign, Ricoh Asia Pacific and Eco Business convened a panel discussion, on the theme ‘Driving Sustainability for Our Future’, in line with Ricoh’s slogan last year. The Ricoh Group has developed this slogan to encourage all employees to make concerted efforts to enhance sustainability. It is developed to reflect its strong commitment to contributing to the creation of a sustainable society by creating and providing new value through its business operations.
To celebrate Singapore’s 50 years of independence, together with IBM and World Environment Center, Ricoh Asia Pacific had another fruitful discussion with various environmental and sustainability experts, professors and representatives from multinational corporations on the same day.
Eco Action Day is a national public awareness campaign organised by Ricoh, in partnership with key NGO, government and private sector partners in Singapore. It is held on 5 June every year, to commemorate the United Nations Environment Programme’s World Environment Day, which seeks to raise global awareness on the need to take positive action for the environment. Every year, Ricoh, along with various supporting partners, engages its employees, customers, corporate neighbours, government organisations and the wider public, to take steps to reduce their impact on the environment. Till date, more than 700 organisations, including multinational corporations, government agencies, private companies and tertiary institutions have participated in Eco Action Day.
